Tibetan Buddhist retreat center on 700 acres in the San Juan Mountains near Pagosa Springs, Colorado
Tara Mandala is an international contemplative community and retreat center located on 700 acres of pristine wilderness in the San Juan Mountains near Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Founded in 1993 by Lama Tsultrim Allione, one of the first American women ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun, the center has evolved from a canvas yurt on a mountain property into a comprehensive spiritual campus. The physical heart of the retreat center is the magnificent three-story Tara Temple, which anchors the community's daily practice and serves as the focal point for teachings and meditation.
What distinguishes Tara Mandala is its integration of traditional Tibetan Buddhist practice with modern psychological understanding, and its centering of feminine wisdom as essential rather than supplemental to the path. The community draws teachings from a thousand-year-old tradition while addressing contemporary concerns: emotional difficulty, inner conflict, relational harm, ecological crisis, and the search for meaning. The center operates as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) religious organization incorporated in Colorado, with a commitment to financial transparency, equitable access, and long-term sustainability through scholarships, sliding-scale offerings, and donation-based programs.
Tara Mandala functions simultaneously as a physical place, a teaching lineage, and a global community. The land provides conditions for deep retreat, the lineage provides the map of practice, and the community provides support for the journey. Residential and solitary meditation retreats range from weekends to several months. The center also offers structured long-term practice paths, online courses, livestreamed teachings, and virtual sangha gatherings that connect practitioners across dozens of countries. In recent years, Tara Mandala has broken ground on Tara's Pure Land, a sacred site featuring a Zhitro Temple, a modern approach to kiln cremation rooted in traditional Tibetan ritual, and Memorial Stupas for prayer, practice, and reflection.
The retreat center's digital hub, yana, serves as a gateway to exclusive teachings, practices, and community connection for members of the Sustaining Sangha. This platform bridges the wisdom of the lineage with the global sangha, offering recorded teachings, guided meditations, discounts on programs, and access to a rich library of resources. The Dakini Store provides dharma and practice items including sacred texts, ritual implements, malas, and thangkas, with proceeds supporting the center's mission of preserving teachings and fostering community.
