Vista Verde Retreat

Elizabeth, the founder of Vista Verde Retreat, flew to New Mexico on Valentine's Day in 1990 and understood at once why they call it the "Land of Enchantment." The art, the spirituality and the light drew her to buy property in Carson, just outside Taos. An artist, designer and healing arts practitioner, she set out to create a sanctuary there for like-minded people, a haven for artists and healers.

The land is 45 acres of forest, with hiking trails looping across 25 of them. It lies close to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument and the Orilla Verde Recreation Area. Getting there means three miles of dirt road, passable year-round, though four-wheel drive is recommended in snow and spring mud. The village of Carson has about 150 residents, a cafe and general store, a post office and a fire department.

Lodging is spread across the property. The Main House and Ranch House each have a full kitchen, and around them are the Straw Bale, Adobe, Ranch and Stick casitas, the Green Hut, tent sites and a camper. Apart from the beds are the Studio, the Temple and the Playhouse, an event space for weddings, dinners and parties.

Practitioners offer services that guests can book directly: crystal bowl sound baths, Reconnective Healing, polarity therapy, massage and forest bathing. Private cooks can be arranged for meals. Taos, Santa Fe and Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs are within day-trip reach.
