Boutique retreat on Psathi Bay, Kea—yoga, meditation, and Greek island life in seven stone suites
Nearly three decades ago, a family arrived on Kea during a vacation and fell in love with the island's abundant simplicity and the ancient Kastriani monastery overlooking the Aegean. Coming from an urban background, they decided to shift their life's trajectory and move to live near nature. That pilgrimage eventually led to Kea Retreat—an elegant boutique space tucked within a stony mountain range on Psathi Bay, where virgin landscape meets a private, pristine bay.
The retreat occupies seven restored kathikies, traditional Greek stone farmhouses that merge into the rocky hillside. Each suite features whitewashed interiors, wood tones, handcrafted décor, locally woven textiles, and private verandas overlooking the Aegean Sea. The design reflects Cycladic simplicity and slow living—no excess, no noise, only the sound of the sea and the silence of nature.
Beyond accommodation, Kea Retreat operates as a working farm and kitchen. A flourishing vegetable garden, large olive grove, and vineyard—all planted using traditional Greek farming techniques—supply the retreat's meals. Uri, one of the founders' sons and a Michelin-trained chef who trained at Noma, Ikoyi, Amass, Estela, and Blue Hill, leads the kitchen. Meals pair farm and sea produce with local ingredients and high-end technique, embodying what the retreat calls "local, plentiful, and flavorful Greek quality."
Retreats run six days and five nights, Sunday to Friday or Saturday to Thursday depending on the program. A typical week weaves together two yoga classes daily, one meditation or ceremony, three abundant meals, and spontaneous dancing each evening. Teachers guide practices in yoga, breathwork, embodiment, and sound; additional activities include kayaking to isolated beaches, snorkeling, hiking ancient trails with ruins from the 12th century BC, visiting the Kastriani monastery, and picnicking in the vineyard. The retreat's culture, as described on its pages, is one in which guests "wake up to a purple sunrise, silent meditation and yoga practice, and end the day dancing with loved ones to Greek melodies, ouzo in hand, overlooking a blood moon lit bay."
Kea Retreat has been featured in Vogue, recognized as one of Greece's best boutique hotels, and praised for its "perfect combination of local tradition and high-end luxury." The space remains intimate—only seven suites—preserving the silence and peace that drew the founding family to the island in the first place.
